About the Item
Unique Historical Work of Art Dated 1918 "L' Astronome (The Astronomer) by Fedinant Roybet.
This is an original and one-of-a-kind artistic presentation- a superb pyrography incising on wood entitled verso "The Astronomer" by Fedinant Roybet.
Signed A. Hougue 30/3 1918 lower right. It is probably the French artist Jean Louis Marie Adrien de la Hougue, (1874 - 1959) and with the title "L Astronome" incised on back
The prototype is either directly "The Astronomer" by Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920)
painting from the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon or the engraving by Charles Walther (1846-1925) which must be at the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims.
This pyrography beautifully captures a gathering of astronomer enthusiasts hovering around a worldly globe based on a drawing of very high quality and was likely made very shortly after the original was created.
Likely unique, this work of art is beautifully hand incised using pyrographic techniques.
Dimensions: 12.75 inches high and 16 inches wide
Provenance: Old French collection.

py·rog·ra·phy is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century and likely originated in France.
