About the Item
A wonderful toleware and card perpetual calendar, circa 1870 possibly slightly earlier, as there are a number of dated handwritten notes on fronts and backs of the monthly inserts, recording exceptional weather events in the early 1870s (snow on Oct 18-19, 1871, big snow storm March 31, 1872, etc.)
Another set of notes were added in the 1940s "Brian's birthday" on Feb 15, the return of Ian Buchanan from WW2 on June 27, 1946, and the very evocative "left in the morning September 14, 1948." A wonderful little window into the lives of its previous owners.
Complete with one exception "a make do and mend" handwritten SUNDAY on the back of the Saturday insert obviously miss placed at some point on its travels.
The toleware case has its original black painted finish with faded gilt edging, age related wear and abrasions, foxing and discolouration to all the card inserts. A makers stamp just under the hanging hole, John Heath Birmingham.
John Heath established his stationery business in 1852, delivering office products around the Birmingham area.
