About the Item
Tokyo Optical Company 20 x 120 Naval Binoculars official issue for the Japan Defence Agency, manufactured in October 1984, supplied via Yonei Shoten (government contractor), manufactured by Toko / Kowa (Tōkyō Kōgaku / Kowa Kōki) under the Type 2 120 mm binocular programme.
The binoculars have integrated lighting for night-time naval use (chart + ocular illumination), a typical feature on ship bridge binoculars.
This is a complete Cold War-era optical system originally deployed by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
Built for surveillance and naval navigation, the optics feature an impressive 20×120 magnification with a 3° field of view, mounted on a rugged fixed pedestal. This particular unit retains its complete electrical control box, with labelled toggle switches for lighting the azimuth scale and internal range finder cross hair, as well as a built-in variable resistor system for brightness adjustment.
The set has been professionally polished and paired with a Hard wood and aluminium heavy duty tripod also polished and lacquered to compliment the finish of the binoculars, the binoculars are made from cast aluminium with bronze parts such as the lens housing and tilt mechanism.
A superbly preserved and visually dramatic object, this binocular set offers exceptional historical and display value both as a conversation piece and as a window into Cold War maritime technology
