An altimeter is an instrument for measuring the height of a body above sea level and the ground below.
The last photo is the gift box.
Altimeters are based on the principle, discovered by Pascal, that atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude, so in essence they are barometers equipped with a graduated-metric scale.
The most commonly used altimeter is an ordinary aneroid metal barometer that carries, alongside the scale of pressures in millimeters of mercury or millibars, a scale of heights calibrated in meters or feet; atmospheric pressure in fact decreases as height above sea level increases.
William Stanley 1829-1909
The son of a mechanical engineer, he began working with his father in 1849, immediately making improvements to technical drawings and creating new tools at the same time.
The study of drawing tools was adapted to the needs of the industrial revolution. Around the world, fields of activity such as surveyor, engineer, architect and navigator were expanding at an increasing rate. Surveys were taken of vast areas, such as the Indian continent, while charting huge tracts of ocean. This climate of innovation prompted William Stanley to open his first workshop in Holborn London in 1854 to produce drawing instruments.
