About the Item

An elegant and extremely decorative French 18th century Louis XVI period giltwood barometer thermometer. The most decorative barometer thermometer retains its original glass pane enclosing the display. The background is decorated with the original backing displaying French writing describing the weather conditions with fine pierced hands and framed within a mottled giltwood border. Tempete: Storm, G de Pluie: G of Rain (Goutte: Drop), Pluie ou Vent: Rain or Wind, Variable: Variable, Beau Temps: Nice Weather, Beau Fixe: Nice Fixed, Très Sec: Very Dry. At the base are lovely richly carved foliate designs while the pierced top crown displays an impressive laurel wreath with a central finely detailed bird perched on a quiver and the eternal flame flanked by berried laurel garlands.
