About the Item
Impressive French mahogany barometer and thermometer from the Louis-Philippe period (Circa 1840), by Jean Gabriel Augustin Chevalliier. The barometer features an indicator arrow adjusted by an acorn finial at the bottom of the case. The dial is marked on the bottom "L'Ingenieur Chevallier Opt. - Place du pont neuf, 15 à Paris." The case has been refinished with French polish, and a new mercury tube has been installed so that the baronet is in working order.
Jean Gabriel Chevallier was born in Mantes, France (just outside of Paris) September 13, 1778. After studying with his grandfather, Francois Trochon, an optician with a shop at 1 place de l'Horologe, and other renowned opticians, astronomers, mathematicians, scientists and engineers of the day, Jean Gabriel established a shop at 1 quai de l'Horologe in 1796, and adopted the honorific "l'Ingenieur Chevallier." He was a skilled craftsman and received numerous awards from the French Republic, Emperor Napoleon and subsequent royalty, including that of "Chevalier" in the French Legion of Honor.
In 1848 he moved his business to 15 Rue de Pont Neuf and sold it to his daughter and son-in-law. Jean Gabriel remained associated with the business as advisor and consultant until his death in 1848. Thereafter, his daughter and son-in-law continued to operate under the name "Maison de l'Ingenieur Chevallier." An engraving of the original shop is attached.
