Constructed from Solid Mahogany
From our Apothecary Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Mahogany Apothecary Cabinet. The Cabinet made from solid Mahogany stands upon a circular base with flush fitting campaign carry handle and twin brass escutcheons. When unlocked, the right door opens and the left door can be unlatched from the inside. Both doors hinge outwards revealing an extensive contents of Georgian pharmaceutical bottles and a front velvet pad with two turned handles. The doors hold 18 glass bottles in total with various remedies still containing their original labels. The central section drops down via the turned handles and sits with the handles as the feet revealing 8 further glass bottles and a pull out partitioned drawer containing 6 further bottles, weighing scales and a selection of tools. The Apothecary Box dates to the early 19th century Georgian period during the reign of George IV circa 1830.
The Apothecary Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.
Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role.
Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.
