About the Item

A refined 19th-century Grand Tour thermometer, executed in gilt bronze with a silvered bronze central cylinder, reflecting the Neoclassical revival popular among European travelers and collectors of the period. The vertical cylindrical thermometer retains its original glass tube and engraved temperature scale, housed within a silver-over-bronze casing that provides elegant contrast against the richly gilt elements. The thermometer is raised on an architecturally conceived base adorned with finely cast classical masks and stylized female heads, interspersed with floral swags, scrolling acanthus, and anthemion motifs. The sculptural base terminates in paw feet, reinforcing the classical vocabulary and lending visual weight and presence. A turned finial crowns the form, completing the composition with balanced symmetry. Both decorative and functional, this piece exemplifies the Grand Tour tradition of transforming scientific instruments into sculptural souvenirs inspired by classical antiquity. Well suited for display on a mantel, desk, or library table, it offers strong visual impact and historical interest for collectors of Grand Tour objects, Neoclassical decorative arts, or antique scientific instruments. Continental Europe, 19th century (Grand Tour). Materials: Gilt bronze, silvered bronze, and glass. Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface patina, and light rubbing to the silvered surface consistent with age.
