About the Item

A set of three Imperial standard Avoir weights by De Grave of London, for Lancashire County Council, dated 1906. 5, 10, 20 lbs. Indenture number: 2757. Stamped with Royal Ciphers and Portcullis date marks. 5 lbs: 4 ¼ x 2 ½ x 2 ¼ inches. (10.5 x 6.5 x 5.5 cm). 10 lbs: 5 x 2 ½ x 2 ¼ inches. (13 x 6.5 x 5.5 cm). 20 lbs: 6 ¼ x 4 ¼ x 3 ½ inches. (16 x 10.5 x 9 cm). De Grave of London was established in the 18th century, circa 1767, and produced weights, scales and measures. From 1817 to 1844 the business was known as De Grave and Son, and was located at 59 St. Martin's-le-Grand, London. From 1845 to 1871, the firm was known as De Grave, Short and Co., and from 1871 onwards, De Grave, Short, Fanner and Co. In 1890, the firm was located at 13 Farringdon Road, London. The firm became part of the Avery organisation in 1922, the name Avery De Grave appears on some local standard weights.
