Bottiglia di Leida della seconda metà del XIX secolo si tratta di un componente elettrico che accumula e conserva una carica elettrica ad alta tensione per mezzo di una fonte esterna ad esempio un generatore elettrostatico. Generalmente realizzata da un recipiente in vetro, spesso una bottiglia, rivestita all’esterno di una lamina metallica e riempita all’interno con sottilissime lamine dorate per un migliore contatto elettrico e collegate con un'asta conduttrice in metallo che termina superiormente con una sferetta inserita nel tappo di bachelite della bottiglia. L'ultima foto è la confezione regalo. La bottiglia di Leida venne uilizzata per condurre molti esperimenti sull’elettricità già a partire dal XVIII° secolo, ful il primo strumento usato per accumulare cariche elettriche, che potevano essere scaricate a piacimento dallo sperimentatore. Sono utilizzate ancora oggi a scopo didattico per dimostrare i principi dell’elettrostatica e nel passato veniva utilizzata per caricare dei conduttori. L’invenzione viene attribuita al fisico olandese Pieter van Musschembroek che la presentò alla comunità sicentifica nel 1746 battezzando lo strumento con il nome della propria città, Leida che era anche la sede dell’università presso la quale ricopriva la cattedra di professore. Le bottiglie di Leida venivano spesso utilizzate in giochi di società, per fare avvertire la scossa ad una catena di persone che si tenevano per mano. La persona all'inizio della fila toccava la lamina di metallo esterna della bottiglia e l'ultima la sfera in contatto con l'interno della bottiglia. Tutte le persone che componevano la catena avvertivano la scossa. Buono stato. Altezza cm 21,5 – inches 8.4, diametro cm 6,2 – inches 2.4.
