About the Item

Prismatic surveying compass signed T.G. Co. Ltd London no. B312272, 1945, model MK III, in use by British army officers during World War II. This is a small vintage compass, typically used in recreational sailing, thus on vessels less prone to magnetic deflections. It can also be held in the hand, allowing it to be moved away from the boat's magnetic fields. It is equipped with a targeting system with a finish line, complete with an optical prism for magnification, and a goniometric compass rose to measure the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Good condition, fully functional. Measures cm 6 x 3 - 2.4 x 1.3 in. The last photo is gift-wrapped. T.G. Co. Ltd. was the abbreviation used by The Gramophone Company. After merging with subsidiary His Master's Voice and Columbia Graphophone Co. in 1931, the company became EMI (Electric Musical Industries). The trademark "The Gramophone Co." continued to be used for various items, but was changed to "T.G. Co. Ltd." for war contracts. This designation ceased to be used at the end of the conflict. The earliest historical records of the use in Europe of the magnetic directive force date from the late 12th or early 13th century, and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the 16th century. An accurate description can be found in the short compendium De la esfera y de la arte de navegar by Martín Cortés (1551), which provides precise instructions for the construction of the compass. The instrument's refinements were largely responsible for the great discoveries of new lands beginning in the mid-15th century.
