About the Item

Wooden fruit tree stethoscope, early 20th century English manufacture. Measures 4.5x 15.4 cm - 1.8x6.1 in. Bon état. The last photo is the gift box. Curiosity A stethoscope is an instrument used to auscultate the patient's heart or lungs: it allows sounds to be transmitted without forcing the physician to place the ear directly on the patient's skin. The stethoscope (from Greek στήθος, stéthos chest, and σκοπή, skopé observation) was invented in France in 1816 by René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec. The story goes that he came up with the idea after being forced to use a rolled-up notebook to sense the heartbeats of an obese patient, because he could not auscultate her by simply leaning on her ear. Later the stethoscope was perfected, through the use of a wooden cylinder. They were made of different materials and had different shapes; some consisted of two pieces so they could be better carried in a bag.
