About the Item
This is a speed bag platform made by the Narragansett Machine Company ("NMC") out of Providence, Rhode Island. NMC started off in 1882, and became the foremost manufacturer of gymnasiums and exercise equipment in the United States during the late 1800s through early 1900s. This is an extremely Fine example of the "N.M.C. 36 inch diameter adjustable bracket striking bag drum, model no. 890. The casting on the frame has a large decorative NMC logo. This example is one of a handful that survived and is the most original example existing. The wood platform is in the original finish. This heavy professional example is so well made and is listed at 320 lbs. These platforms contained so much iron... almost all were lost to the Scrap Metal Drives of World War II. The bag in the picture is not included. The original condition is amazing and perfect for a collectors display and solid enough to use everyday. We dismantled every part cleaned oiled and reassembled it all. The Narragansett Machine Company literature reads...
Adjustable striking bag bracket drums:
The Standard drums are built up solid with maple face and heavy backing giving solid surface with sufficient weight to check the impact of the bag. A mechanically well built device for supporting and adjusting a standard drum. It has a geared adjusting screw, with a ball thrust bearing, having a range of 18 inches. The heavy drum with its substantial brackets offers a weighty resistance to the blows of the bag.
Heres an interesting note: I was told that these examples were sometimes repurposed as a 2 person kitchen table. If you can picture the wood platform part turned upside down (only 4 bolts) it works nicely as a hight adjustable wall mounted table.

Very Large Ophtalmotrope

What is an ophthalmotrope? An ophthalmotrope is an apparatus for demonstrating the movements of the eye and the action of the different muscles which produce them, consisting essentially of a model eyeball to which are attached strings and pulleys to duplicate the line force of the muscles.
We think this example is most likely French from the early 20th century. The base is marble with paw feet. It’s also quite large at well over 3 foot tall. This instrument is very complete. It also includes additional parts to set the mechanics up in a different way. In the pictures above the strings are attached to a keyboard. The alternative replaces the keyboard with string guide with a dozen hanging tubular weights. This is one of the largest and most decorative examples we have seen. I have only seen pictures of ophthalmotropes and never one this fine and complete. It’s as rare and impressive show piece.
