About the Item

Fine quality hand made craftsmanship to this 19th century Victorian walking stick; hand carved of premium hardwood (possibly pecan), with a continuous twist design. The top is decorated with a firm, hand repousse sterling silver antler or horn simulated pattern with a hand forged thumb recession (marked "sterling" underneath the handle----see image); really well made. Purchaser could polish up the sterling silver handle to its original high luster if desired. I personally prefer the "aged" darkened patina surface, so I have chosen to leave it alone. The original finish is superb with a lovely surface and patina. The mildly tapered shaft ends in the original (often missing or replaced) silver tip decorated in an etched geometric pattern. Comfortable to use and pleasant to look at, this antique American made cane would make a lovely addition to a discerning collection of rare and unusual walking sticks, folk art, or Americana. It should be noted that most 19th century walking sticks were used as fashion statements just as often as for orthopaedic utility; selecting them with the same emphasis as if they were choosing a hat to wear. There was even an individual style and gait that users employed in carrying and walking with their canes. Dimensions: 34" high x 4 1/2" (handle) x 1 1/4" (shaft) Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.
