Collectible Hap Jacobs Classic longboard. Features beautiful red panels and black stripes with box single fin and side trailing fins. Shaped and signed by the legendary Hap Jacobs. A superb example of a Classic Hap Jacobs longboard surfboard in all original condition. In 1953, Hap Jacobs partnered with the legendary surfer and shaper Dale Velzy. Together they opened surf shops in the Southern California towns of Venice and San Clemente. A couple years later, in 1955 Hap opened another shop in Redondo Beach, called Dive N' Surf with Bev Morgan. Hap would shape surfboards while Bev (an expert diver) focused on the wetsuit sales. Due to Jacobs continued work shaping boards throughout the late 1950s-early 1960s, he ended up as the final of the four great Hermosa Beach shapers (along with Greg Noll, Bing Copeland, and Dewey Weber) to hold his ground in the area. Jacobs opened his own store in 1960 along Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach. It was then that Jacobs developed his iconic red-diamond logo. Jacobs abruptly stopped shaping in 1971 due to the shortboard designs of the day gaining instant popularity, eliminating demand for the longboards. Rather than putting his skillfully crafted longboards on-sale, Jacobs brought them out the back door of his Pacific Coast Highway showroom and sawed them all in half. After his career as a shaper ended, Hap made his living running the King Harbor fuel dock in addition to catching swordfish aboard his boat “Patricia J” Jacobs would later go back to shaping longboards during the early 1990s, during the revival of Classic longboard demand. Hap shaped his last surfboard in 2019. His hand shaped surfboards remain highly collectible due to his legendary status and skill as a surfboard craftsman, a true Pioneer of the surfboard industry. Kent Jacobs, Hap's son carries on the family name and logo shaping custom surfboards out of Hawaii to this day.
