This classic longboard from the days of Beach Boys music and 1960s long boarding warms our heart. Just looking at it conjures up dreams of California's golden surf years. At 9 feet, 11 inches long and a thick redwood stringer running down it's center this Hobie surfboard was the perfect design for hotdogging on the waves between Rincon and LaJolla. Faded repairs from back in the day show the authentic originality of the board. The 3/4" redwood stringer and glassed-in wood fin make great accents to the ochre rails, goldenrod deck and aqua logo. Double-logos call this board out as something special. The lack of a tail-block accentuates the look and length of the board-allowing the energy to flow endlessly out at either end. This board is 100% ridable, in good unrestored condition with a few vintage repairs. Hobart 'Hobie' Alter, the original owner designer of the 'Hobie Surboards' company, was a major force in the surfboard evolution. A native of Southern California, Alter began surfing as a young boy and constructed the first Hobie Surfboards in his family's Laguna Beach garage. Hobie made his first trip to Hawaii in the winter of 1953 where he built a few large Hawaiian elephant guns for his buddies, most notably big wave pioneer Buzzy Trent, to surf the very large waves of Makaha and the North Shore of Oahu. In 1954, shortly after his return from Hawaii, The Hobie Surfboards shop opened in Dana Point, CA. It was here that the first boards to carry the Hobie name were produced. Hobie Surfboards continued to grow, probably easily out-producing most other companies of the day. From 1961 through 1965 Hobie surfboards won most of the major surf contests across the U.S. and Hawaii. This board, made during that period, is a special relic from this era.
