About the Item
Antique Circa 1865 iron lawn jockey attributed to JW Fiske of New York.
Figure of a young boy standing on a bail of cotton. Out stretched arm to hold a lantern (originally a horse). He wears a white shirt, blue pants, and is barefoot, 44" tall. Documented history on the Lawn Jockey is solid back to the 1850s, but prior history is based on putting pieces of a puzzle together through eyewitness accounts, legend, and speculation. The trail of puzzle pieces traces the history of the Lawn Jockey back through the Civil War in the 1860s to the Underground Railroad in the 1850s. Legend dates back to 1776 and has it that George Washington created the first Groomsman hitching post, or "Jocko," in honor of the frozen boy, Jocko Graves, in the 1770s. Gen. Washington wanted to mount a surprise attack on a British encampment during the Revolutionary War. Several black boys and free men joined the group. A young black man named Tom "Jocko" Graves wanted to fight, but Washington said he was too young and asked the boy to hold a lantern for the troops as they crossed the Delaware, and he froze to death. Washington was moved by the boy's dedication and ordered a statue made in his honor. The jockey's precursor, the "groomsman", was born in the Old South. The groomsman later evolved into their jockey image and became national figures after World War II.
