This classic longboard is a throwback to the Beach Boys era and captures a slice of times gone by. Perfect to prop in a corner, hang on a wall or sit atop a Woody Station Wagon headed to the beach. The red stripe and rail, three redwood stringers, redwood nose and tail block, logo emblazoned across the deck, its' number "3740" and the signs of use in the waves make this a proud and beautiful board. The fact that it is an authentic Duke Kahanamoku, all original, 1965 surfboard only adds to it's allure. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (shown in photograph surrounded by Duke Boards and surfers) was an Olympic champion swimmer, sheriff of Honolulu, ambassador-at-large for Hawaii and most importantly acknowledged as the father of modern day surfing. In short he was the epitome of Hawaiian manhood: athletic waterman, the respectful gentleman and a heart full of Aloha. His name was given to him at birth, in the time of "The Kingdom of Hawaii," and it is not too much of a stretch to say he grew into his name so that in his elder years he became literally "Duke" of Hawaii. During the 1960s the Duke Invitational Surfing Championship was filmed and shown worldwide on ABC. It was an invitation only affair and the biggest honor a surfer could have was to participate. Duke had his own surf team in the mid-1960s with Butch Van Artsdalen, Paul Strauch, Joey Cabell and Fred Hemmings having the honor to represent the Duke in his twilight years. The Duke had his own brand of clothing and shoes, his own restaurant, his own surf competition, his own skateboards and of course his own surfboard line. During the period that this board was made the Duke was busier than any other time in his illustrious life. This was the hay day of the Duke invitational contest, he had his own surf team and His Manager/ partner Kimo Hollinger had lucrative footwear and clothing contracts not to mention Dukes restaurant in Waikiki so why not your own brand of surfboards for your own surf team to ride? Making it a must have for any " Grom" from Waimea to Wisconsin!!! Classic. Condition is all original, this board was used for surfing, it has several un-repaired dings and scratches, demonstrating use and authenticity. Truly a fantastic board for its' age.
