A 1930s Pacific Homes Waikiki wooden paddleboard is ultra rare, especially when it's in good, all original, condition. As these boards were made of wood and often shared by family members or friends they became waterlogged or sun-beaten over time. This rare survivor is exceptional in that it is all original, has a solid balsa wood core, redwood rails, a mahogany deck and bottom and is polished off with a redwood nose-block. This Waikiki model was originally known as the Swastika model and as war with Germany loomed the company changed the logo and changed its name to the Waikiki. The balsa wood core is visible via a small ding on the nose - this is one situation where preserving the damage actually adds value to the board by showing its internal construction. Founded in 1908, The Los Angeles based Pacific Ready Cut Homes was the worlds largest maker of “kit houses” with a 24 ACRE wood milling site on South Boyle Avenue. As a result of the Stock Market Crash, the advent of the Great Depression and the decline of the kit housing business the founder's son, Myers Butte, returned to LA from his studies at Stanford and introduced the manufacturing of wooden surfboards to his father's business. The company changed its name to Pacific System Homes and became a leading manufacture in wooden surfboard production. The boards were sold at beach clubs, department and sporting goods stores. Many surfers and surfboard builders worked for the fledgling division including Preston “Pete” Peterson and Lorrin “Whitey” Harrison who reportedly designed and shaped the prototypes. This board measures an impressive 14 feet and would be a true stand out in any collection or display area.
