RARE Fully Restored Velzy and Jacobs Balsa Wood Gun Surfboard, Mid-1950s

This rare and important fully restored solid balsa wood surfboard, classed as a "big wave gun," is recognized amongst surfboard enthusiasts as a masterpiece. Shaped by the most influential surfboard shapers of the 20th century: Hap Jacobs and Dale Velzy and made at the Velzy and Jacobs surf shop in Venice Beach, California. This board was recently and lovingly restored by master shaper, restorer, surfer, ASP founder and head of the Triple Crown of Surfing, Randy Rarick. Prior to restoration this board was in the hands of one owner for 15 years. The restoration was performed with a light touch and great reverence was taken to retain the board's soul. From the matched balsa repairs to the all original 1950s decal this 9 foot surfboard is a wonderful work of artistry. The board is light-weight and has a dark mahogany 'D' Fin that offers a beautiful contrast to the golden tone of the balsa wood. The rails are sharp and the board is narrow and rakish. The glass job is smooth and the varnish, deep in color. This board screams "Ride me!!!" to an experienced surfer who will embody 1950s surf style etiquette and ride a wave fitting for such a glorious surf-Craft. (Beginning surfers please disregard this paragraph). A bit more about the shapers behind this board: Velzy began shaping boards in the 1940s. He opened the very first professional surf shop in Manhattan Beach in 1950. He and his younger friend Hap Jacobs surfed Hermosa Beach regularly, Jacobs owned Dive and Surf in Redondo. In 1953 the two joined forces and opened surfboards by Velzy-Jacobs a larger shop in Venice CA which fast became the number one surfboard production outlet in the country and the first surf shop anywhere to introduce their own surf logo silk-screened t-shirts. The pair flourished and in 1959 they opened another shop in San Clemente California because Velzy wanted to move there. Jacobs ran the Venice Beach shop and Velzy, the San Clemente. Together they financed Bruce Browns first film endeavor resulting in Brown giving the name Velzyland to a then un-named surf spot on Oahu's North Shore (It carries this name until this day). The partnership dissolved amicably in 1959, both continuing on for many years as friends and surfboard manufacturers under their own names. The Jacobs brand is still in business today.
