About the Item
Scared Head Golf Club, Play Club, By Tom Dunn.
An elegant, prime example of a long nose golf club made by Tom Dunn of Wimbledon. The stained and polished beech-wood head in good original condition with historical repair (see images). There is a lead weight to the rear, traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole and a splice joint with whipping. It is stamped with the makers stamp 'T. Dunn'. The hickory shaft is original to the club (possibly cut down) and has a sheep skin leather grip.
Approximate head size:-
a = 11cm
b = 3cm
c = 4.9cm
Tom, son of Willie Dunn Sr and brother of Willie Dunn Jr, a member of a great golfing dynasty family, was himself a golfer, club maker and prolific golf course architect, claiming to have laid out a total of 137 courses, notably many around London. In total, Dunn had four top-10 finishes in the Open Golf Championship.
The early clubs are made with long slender shallow-faced heads with an ash or hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
