About the Item
A rather unusual late 19th century anthropomorphic taxidermy scene, very much in the manner of Walter Potter (2 July 1835 – 21 May 1918)
The scene shows a Nautilus shell as a carriage, with an elderly lady within being pulled by a Chameleon. The coachman sits on the top with the reins, and what appears to be a bell boy to the side, with two well dressed passersby ahead.
All the characters have beee meticulously made from crustaceans over a wire skeleton and dressed with textiles and hats. All housed in its original ebonised glass case, with original paper background and pine backing boards.
Just a wonderful and extremely rare piece of English folk art, age related wear, some staining to the backing paper, the front panel of glass has been replaced.
