This 1920s Alpacca Art Deco Black Enamel Cigarette Case is a standout example of early 20th-century German design, crafted in the alloy historically referred to as “German Silver”, a silver-toned metal made from copper, nickel, and zinc. Although not actual silver, Alpacca (also spelled Alpaka) became a prized material in the 1920s to 1950s for its durability, bright luster, and affordability, making it ideal for finely decorated cigarette cases and accessories.
The case features deep black enamel on both front and back, with the top showcasing a dramatic Art Deco geometric motif: radiating elongated triangular forms, almost like beams of light, converging around a bold central triangle rendered in the signature Alpacca alloy. This striking contrast of jet-black enamel and silver-tone metalwork embodies the essence of Deco, sleek, architectural, and modern.
Stamped “Alpacca” on the clasp and “06” at the interior hinge edge, the piece retains all the details collectors look for in authentic German Deco pocket accessories. Inside, the case displays its original finish with light discoloration from age, a slightly loose elastic strap, and evidence of a second strap that may be missing, common in cigarette cases of this period.
