About the Item

1933 Marathon Art Deco Enamel and Chrome Combination Cigarette Case Lighter This rare 1933 Art Deco Marathon cigarette case and lighter is a refined example of Jazz Age elegance and ingenuity. The case features a bold design of vertical black enamel stripes outlined in polished chrome, set against an abstracted tan and black airbrushed background that continues onto the reverse. A central unengraved cartouche offers the opportunity for personalization, while maintaining the sleek lines of the original design. Inside, the case displays a finely crafted engine-turned chrome interior, complete with two spring-loaded hinged arms to secure cigarettes in place. The interior top, which also forms the base of the lighter, is stamped with the Marathon logo and U.S. Patent No. 1921855, corresponding to F. A. Whittaker’s 1933 design patent for this innovative combination accessory. This early 20th-century invention seamlessly united form and function, reflecting the Art Deco movement’s fascination with modernity, streamlining, and luxury in everyday objects. The Marathon company was a leading American maker of lighters and cigarette cases during the 1920s and 1930s, renowned for their airbrushed enamel finishes, geometric motifs, and Deco stylings. Their pieces embodied the glamour of the Jazz Age while offering practical innovation for the sophisticated smoker. Marathon’s designs are frequently compared to those of contemporaries such as Ronson, Evans, and Dunhill — each celebrated for elevating smoking accessories into objects of style and status. While Ronson focused on patented lighter mechanisms and Evans emphasized streamlined metalwork, Marathon carved its niche with striking Art Deco patterns and colorful enamels, making their creations highly collectible today. This case and lighter are in lovely vintage condition with general wear and minor surface scratches consistent with age. The enamel remains vibrant and intact, and the case opens and closes smoothly. Sold untested, presumed nonfunctional. Internal components not inspected or inventoried.

Located in Red Lion, PA
1933 Art Deco Marathon Combination Lighter & Cigarette Case by F. A. Whittaker A rare and collectible example of 1930s novelty smoking accessories, this Marathon combination lighter and cigarette case showcases the elegance and innovation of Art Deco design. Crafted in 1933 by noted designer F. A. Whittaker, the case features a stunning airbrushed geometric pattern in alternating tan/black and grey/black abstract motifs, with a central cartouche that remains unengraved. The reverse is finished in a sophisticated grey and black design, emphasizing the clean, streamlined aesthetic typical of the era. The interior reveals meticulous attention to detail, including a wheel-turned chrome finish, two hinged cigarette holders for added functionality, and a built-in lighter stamped with US Patent No. 1921855 and marked “Marathon, Trade Mark, Pat Applied For.” Lighter fuel can easily be added via the side compartment near the hinge, and the interior remains exceptionally clean and free of issues. This piece shows gentle, expected wear, including minor enamel losses and an indentation at the lower left corner of the case, reflecting its authentic vintage character. Despite these imperfections, it remains a fully functional and highly desirable collector’s item. Marathon cigarette cases were celebrated in the early 20th century for their combination of practicality and artistry, and F. A. Whittaker was a prominent designer whose work elevated everyday smoking accessories into objects of sophistication. Collectors prize these cases for their mechanical ingenuity, stylish Art Deco design, and historical significance, making them a standout addition to any collection of vintage lighters...
