About the Item
This beautiful porcelain huqqa (or hookah) is of Continental, possibly Russian, origin and was created in the late 19th Century. The item is finely painted and decorated with photo-realistic portraits of the Qajar kings of Persia, Naser al-Din Shah (reigned 1848-1896) and Mozaffar al-Din Shah (reigned 1896-1907), suggesting that the piece was made for the Persian market.
The huqqa is of typical form, with a bell-shaped base, a knopped cylindrical stem and a U-shaped top. The huqqa is painted a strong pink colour and is encircled by white bands. The huqqa also features white medallions which are decorated with detailed half-length portraits of Naser al-Din Shah and Mozaffar al-Din Shah. These are bordered by paintings of stylised foliage and flowers, light blue geometric frames, orange fruits and yellow ribbon bows.
