About the Item

A superb 20th Century weighted ships ashtray and matchbox holder. Recovered from the RMS Windsor Castle upon her decommissioning in 2005. Crafted by Mappin Webb, it is monogrammed with British and Commonwealth insignia. The RMS Windsor Castle was a British ocean liner launched in 1959, serving primarily on the Southampton to South Africa route. Built for the Union-Castle Line, she combined passenger comfort with reliable cargo transport, reflecting the era’s transition from traditional ocean travel to air travel. Renowned for her elegant design and spacious accommodations, the Windsor Castle remained in service until 1977 before being repurposed and eventually decommissioned in 2005.
