About the Item
An art deco desk striker made in Austria, attributed to Franz Xaver Bergman.
This is a gorgeous original early Art Deco sculptural desk-striker lighter, depicting two Arabian moorish carpets vendors in a camel. The whimsical piece is very decorative and has been created in Vienna Austria, between the 1910 and 1915. It is sculpted in bronze metal and embellished with polychrome vivid cold enamels and mount in a rectangular black base. Very heavyweight and extremely well executed piece.

Period: Late Edwardian Art Deco, 1915
Weight: About 2.8 pounds (1.27 Kg).
Measurements: 155 mm by 89 mm by 190 mm (6.10 x 3.5 x 7.5 Inches).
Note: The lighter striker is empty of any flammable, gas or butane substances and is ready to be ship by any carrier. This lighter just need a new flint and proper lighter fluid. Was tested and is in perfect working condition.
Condition: The overall condition of this Austrian striker is excellent. Besides the little normal wear, there is no damage and all parts are secured in their settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.

Franz Bergmann
There were many bronze foundries operating in Vienna in this period, but it was Bergman’s which became the most celebrated, working with a number of celebrated Viennese sculptors at the turn of the 20th Century, such as Bruno Zach, to produce designs for his famous bronze figures. Bergman bronzes are especially famous for having utilised a technique for decorating the bronzes called cold painting. Cold painting as a technique developed in Vienna in the late 19th Century, and involved the application of several layers of paint added to the bronze after firing. It was used to make fashionable collectors’ items. Bergman figures came in three main forms: animal figures, Orientalist sculptures, and erotic figures in the Art Nouveau style. His animal figures were often whimsical and humorous, and often satirical. They have become highly sought-after collectors’ items today. Bergman’s Orientalist sculptures are equally highly sought-after. He was producing these figures at a time when interest in the exotic lands of the Middle East and North Africa was at its peak among Europe’s artists and buyers.
