About the Item
Rare Arts and Crafts Iron Cigar Cutter with Match Holder – Dachshund Dog Motif, c.1900
An exceptional and rare find from the Arts and Crafts movement, this iron cigar cutter with integrated match holder exemplifies the handcrafted quality and attention to detail characteristic of the period.
The piece is constructed primarily of iron, painted black. The match holder, securely riveted to the base plate, is crafted from iron too, maintaining the piece’s functional yet decorative character. A finely rendered dog figure, also riveted to the base, adds a whimsical and sculptural element—likely symbolic or simply an endearing companion piece for a gentleman’s desk or smoking area.
The construction and utilitarian yet elegant design—are hallmarks of Arts and Crafts craftsmanship, celebrating handwork over industrial mass production.

From 1885–88, he completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason in Schweinfurt with the sculptor Wilhelm Kämpf and worked there for a year as a journeyman. Taschner then studied from 1889–95 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under Syrius Eberle and Jakob Bradl. Among his fellow students were the sculptor Georg Wrba and Josef Rauch. He had exhibited widely and was a recipient of several honors and prizes. Taschner passed away in 1913.
