England 1929 Art Deco Chinoiserie Desk Lighter In Sterling Silver Jade And Lapis

About the Item

Art deco box desk lighter made in England. A beautiful table-desk lighter, created in London England back in the 1929. This sculptural piece has been crafted during the high art deco period and was build up with a mix of styles, such the Chinoiserie and the Egyptian revival. Carefully made with motifs of these cultures in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with thin incised engraved figures of mythological dragons. It is fitted with a round lid of three barrels hinge and a push thumb to lift. Mounted on top with an stepped obelisk carved from natural Afghani vivid blue lapis lazuli. It is framed in the middle, with a genuine antique cylinder seal of natural white jade from the Chinese Qing Dynasty (1604-1911). The jade (23 x 30 x 30 mm) is a great piece of art, carved in the 19th century and depicts mountains, trees and the figure of a mythological dragon in the clouds. Although this piece is not signed by the silversmith artist nor is it stamped by the maker, the manufacturing quality is exceptional. We are sure that the two carved pieces are from the Qing imperial period and most likely brought from China around the 1900s as a memento from the old dynasty. Egyptian Revival For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. Between the 1860 and 1890, ancient cities were discovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Alexandria. Archaeological excavations in Egypt, Greece and Rome, discovered artistic pieces of these ancient cultures. These fabulous discoveries, stimulated cultural trips to these countries, popularly called "grand tour". Being the case that the enthusiast visitors bring back small objects, like souvenirs to be assembled into jewelry. The starting point of these trips were in the cities of Rome and Venice. Chinoiserie The term chinoiserie is from the French word chinois, meaning “Chinese” and refers to European artistic style that reflects the influence of China and is characterized by the use of Chinese designs, asymmetry, whimsical changes in size, the use of lacquered materials and abundant decoration. . Chinoiserie entered Europe in about the last quarter of the 17th century and reached its peak in the mid-18th century, when it was assimilated by Rococo. Weight: 82.20 Grams, (52.69 Dwt). Measurements: Base diameter 36 mm and a height is 52 mm (1.425 x 2.5 Inches). Hallmarks: All parts are well stamped with British crown marks, the lion's head for the city of London, and the gothic letter O for the production and assayed year 1929. Note: This piece is empty of any substances and is ready to be ship by any carrier. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry pouch. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is exceptional. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the silver or silver.
