This highly unusual 1930s Art Deco cigarette case presents a fantastical scene in bold, raised, metal and enamel. A classic harlequin, rendered in geometric and cubist-inspired forms, is depicted with a large ruffled collar and checkered outfit, holding a delicate ballerina poised en pointe in her tutu and toe shoes. They overlook a vibrant, psychedelic landscape punctuated by geometric shapes, with a distant castle in the background. The bright, radiant sky is alive with beams of colored light, creating a truly whimsical and imaginative composition.
Crafted by the renowned J. M. Fisher
Co. in the 1930s, this case bears the firm’s signature stamp, J. M. F. Co, on the internal spring-loaded arm. Despite some minor wear, including enamel loss and discoloration to the metal on the back, the interior remains largely clean, and the spring-loaded arm functions perfectly, allowing the case to open and close smoothly.
