In our collection Tabacology: Charming antique pipe rack painted in Hindeloopen(see below) attributed to Arend Roosje (1869-1914). This pipe rack could hold four pipes; the pipes in the rack, three of which are old ( Bruyere) Briar pipes come with the rack, that is signed on the back with "H" from Hindeloopen. This charming antique painted folk art piperack from Hindelopen is adorned in the typical Hindeloopen manner with four golden rozettes and a golden Lapwing the national symbol for Friesland, one of the Northern provinces of The Netherlands. Origin : Hindeloopen, The Netherlands. Dutch Folk Art Painted Furniture (1700-1900). As the Dutch folk art (painted furniture) pre-eminently belongs to the 'most beautiful things in the world' Monumenta Historica is honoured to hold its memory in esteem Furniture is usually made from solid (indigenous) woods or veneered with exotic kinds of woods. Instead of veneering painting is an often used alternative. When painted the grain of the wood is no longer visible, so from the outside the kind of wood cannot be ascertained; the wood used for furniture in the present case usually was of the cheaper indigenous sorts, such as ash, deal, elm or pine. Without veneering or painting decay as worping or woodworm is inevitable. Ergo, painting is necessary and the Dutch, from the old days involved in the workmanship of woods (e.g. shipbuilding), have cut their coat according to their cloth. The art of painting soft woods was born. These soft woods were primarily made into furniture by the so-called 'witmakers' in the country, who weren't bound by the strict regulations of a guild in the cities. It stands to reason that the fabrication of this furniture originates in the 'Zaanstreek' (the region North of Amsterdam) - it was there that Czar Peter the Great from Russia studied the art of shipbuilding - ; from here distribution took place abroad to Scandinavia, to traders around the 'Zuiderzee' (presently the large lake in the middle of The Netherlands) and to the islands in the North of The Netherlands as Ameland, where local artisans took care of the painting in the respective colors and customs of their towns/regions such as Marken, Hindeloopen and Ameland. Who were those people who painted this furniture? As mentioned above usually this paintwork was executed by local artisans, who weren't first class artists, but capable to copy images from f.i. the bible. In wintertime, when rivers and lakes were frozen, the painting was also done by fishermen or sailors, trying to earn a penny. Although unsigned, recent research has proven that sometimes a first class member of a municipal guild was involved (upon invitation of a customer). In such a case the piece of furniture will be considerably more valuable as the painting should be considered from the hand of the artist or attributed to him. In the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is a painted table attributed to Willem van Royen (1672-1742). In the country painted furniture pre-eminently was suited to exhibit one's riches.Such a piece of furniture was a conversation- as well as a showpiece, Sources: Het Nederlandse Meubelboek by Dr. Annigje C.H.
