About the Item
Large, Arts and Crafts Period, sterling silver-mounted oak cigar/cigarettes box with hinged lid, London, year-hallmarked for 1900, Betjemann Bros. - makers (see Directory of Gold and Silversmiths: Jewellers and Allied Traders, 1838-1914 by John Culme, p. 43 for more information about the company and JGB and EEB silversmiths' hallmark, as both sets of initials are inside of the silversmith's cartouche). The box measures 11 1/4 inches wide (at widest point) x a little over 5 inches high x 6 3/4 inches deep. Sterling silver mounts are hand-hammered. Carved into the wood on the sides of the box is the quote, "The man who smokes thinks like a sage and acts like a Samaritan," from Chapter IV of Edward Bulwer-Lyton's book "Night and Morning." The box comes with a key that fits the lock, but the key is only decorative. The lid is attached with brass hinges. The sterling silver shield mounted on the top of the lid is not engraved. The shield and the other sterling silver mounts have been oxidized to highlight the hammered design. The underside of the box is covered with green felt. The wood that would have made separate compartments inside the box is missing (see photos), commensurate with age and use. The box can be used for muti-purposes (jewelry, etc.). The box is in good antique condition and is a lovely collector's piece.
