About the Item

Rare 1920s Art Deco Evans Case Co. Complimentary Pair of Cigarette Cases A highly unusual and collectible pair of 1920s Art Deco cigarette cases by the celebrated Evans Case Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Known for their beautifully engineered and stylish designs, Evans produced some of the most striking smoking accessories of the Jazz Age, but a complementary matching pair of cigarette cases such as this is exceptionally rare. These are sold together as a pair. Each case features a bold and dramatic diagonal V motif, one rendered in deep black enamel and the other in cream enamel, both set against an airbrushed ground of abstract patterning in cream and black. This interplay of light and dark creates a striking Art Deco contrast, making the pair particularly desirable as a display set or collection centerpiece. Both cases function normally, with the signature spring-loaded interior arm stamped “Evans.” One case shows oxidation to the spring, though this does not affect performance. The enamel surfaces of each case show expected age wear, some enamel losses, and evidence of older restoration work, consistent with their nearly century-old history. The Evans Case Company, founded in the late 19th century in Attleboro, became a leader in the American production of luxury accessories in the 1920s and 1930s. Their output included compacts, vanity cases, lighters, and cigarette cases, all celebrated for combining modern mechanical innovation with the sleek aesthetics of Art Deco design. These pieces epitomized the glamour of the era, when smoking accessories were considered both personal luxuries and fashionable status symbols. While individual Evans cigarette cases are sought after, a complementary matching pair is seldom seen. The mirrored relationship between the two designs, one light, one dark, captures the Deco spirit of symmetry and balance, elevating these from personal accessories to an important decorative art statement. A rare opportunity to acquire a true pair of Evans Art Deco cigarette cases, both beautiful and functional, and an outstanding addition to any collection of Art Deco design, Evans Case Co., or luxury smoking accessories.

1933 Art Deco Marathon Combination Lighter / Cigarette Case by F. A. Whittaker
Located in Red Lion, PA
1933 Art Deco Marathon Combination Lighter & Cigarette Case by F. A. Whittaker A rare and collectible example of 1930s novelty smoking accessories, this Marathon combination lighter and cigarette case showcases the elegance and innovation of Art Deco design. Crafted in 1933 by noted designer F. A. Whittaker, the case features a stunning airbrushed geometric pattern in alternating tan/black and grey/black abstract motifs, with a central cartouche that remains unengraved. The reverse is finished in a sophisticated grey and black design, emphasizing the clean, streamlined aesthetic typical of the era. The interior reveals meticulous attention to detail, including a wheel-turned chrome finish, two hinged cigarette holders for added functionality, and a built-in lighter stamped with US Patent No. 1921855 and marked “Marathon, Trade Mark, Pat Applied For.” Lighter fuel can easily be added via the side compartment near the hinge, and the interior remains exceptionally clean and free of issues. This piece shows gentle, expected wear, including minor enamel losses and an indentation at the lower left corner of the case, reflecting its authentic vintage character. Despite these imperfections, it remains a fully functional and highly desirable collector’s item. Marathon cigarette cases were celebrated in the early 20th century for their combination of practicality and artistry, and F. A. Whittaker was a prominent designer whose work elevated everyday smoking accessories into objects of sophistication. Collectors prize these cases for their mechanical ingenuity, stylish Art Deco design, and historical significance, making them a standout addition to any collection of vintage lighters...
