About the Item
Rare Dunhill Salaam Namiki Cigarette Lighter With Arc de Triomphe Motif A Collaboration between Jaeger LeCoultre and Dunhill in the 1940's
described as the most understated and unknown lighter
Despite its thoroughly oriental name, the Salaam Namiki was developed from a collaboration between the oh-so-British business of Alfred Dunhill, Swiss Jaeger LeCoultre and Japan’s Namiki Manufacturing Company. It’s hard to believe that something quite so rare came from a firm that, today, makes roller-ball pens for a few dollars, but the Salaam Namiki is Japanese art at its most technical and detailed.
They were developed from a collaboration with Jaeger leCoultre’s Henri Rodanet.
Dunhill’s immediately post-war lighters tended towards the elegant but austere, but from 1947, things began to change. The company introduced a series of Salaam lighters featuring maki-e images of Paris landmarks - the Eiffel Tower, L’Opera, Notre Dame and even the Paris coat of arms. Businesses were quick to catch on and commissioned models carrying their logos, like PanAm and Jaeger LeCoultre. Even the French Army and a roll-call of other government departments had their own models.
This intricately crafted lighter is by the superior Maki-e artist, Masato Sato.
The ancient art of Maki-e requires extremely thin layers of lacquer to be applied, smoothed and polished, whilst creating the pattern by precisely sprinkling flakes and powders of precious materials, such as gold, silver and mother-of-pearl, onto the wet lacquer before each layer hardens.
The Rollagas lighter is a dunhill classic, featuring our famous 'snap-shut' lid and a rolling strike mechanism for effortless one-handed use. The Rollagas was first developed in 1953 as a limited-edition model.
Conrad Zellweger designed the Rollagas, which was manufactured in Switzerland by La Nationale. Zellweger's designs for the flame adjuster, burner system, and filling valve are still used today.
Dunhill is a British luxury brand founded by Alfred Dunhill in 1893, originally focused on automobile accessories before expanding to menswear, leather goods, and accessories like watches and pens. Known for its British elegance and craftsmanship, the brand today offers a range of high-end men's products, maintaining its heritage while serving the modern man.

Alfred Dunhill
He inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks).
