About the Item

A fine set of three antique snuff boxes, each illustrating a distinct 19th-century material and craftsmanship, united by their elegance and pocket-sized charm. The first, made of carton bouilli (papier-mâché), measures 6.5 × 4 × 1.5 cm. Its painted decoration, imitating silver marquetry with geometric and floral motifs, testifies to the refinement of mid-19th-century French workshops, where painting was the equal of inlay. The meticulous imitation of metal on a deep black background creates a very delicate marquetry effect. The second, made of blond horn with a tortoiseshell effect, measures 7 × 3.5 × 2 cm, and presents magnificent amber and honey shades. Its polished surface and rounded shapes give this snuff box a soft and sensual feel. This type of object, both understated and luxurious, was highly prized in the second half of the 19th century, particularly in France and England. The third, in finely chiseled silver-plated metal, measuring 4.5 × 2.5 × 1 cm, features a remarkable decoration: an upright sword surrounded by fleurs-de-lis and surmounted by a crown, an emblematic motif with royal or honorary connotations. The sides are finely engraved with stylized foliage, highlighting the precision of the chiseling. This piece, both symbolic and elegant, perfectly embodies the Second Empire's taste for historical ornaments and monarchical references. Each snuffbox is in good condition, with a beautiful patina of use and the traces of time that give the ensemble its authenticity. Together, they offer a superb panorama of 19th-century decorative arts applied to objects of curiosity and personal refinement. A harmonious and decorative set, ideal for collectors or lovers of old boxes.
