Red Enamel “Marathon Product” Cigarette Case. Bold Deco Colorblocking, Chrome Accents
This striking 1930s Art Deco Marathon Cigarette Case showcases the bold geometry and dynamic color palette that defined the machine-age aesthetic. The top features a dramatic central unengraved rectangular cartouche, framed by deep black enamel and flanked by two vertical chrome bars that emphasize balance and symmetry. Beyond these lines sit broad cherry-red enamel rectangles, their vivid color further defined by black-enamel corner framing and the shimmering contrast of bright chrome trim.
The bottom of the case is a solid field of glossy black enamel, giving the piece a sleek, uninterrupted surface typical of streamlined Art Deco design.
Inside, the case reveals a clean, engine-turned interior fitted with its original spring-loaded swinging arm, crisply stamped “Marathon Product.” This arm was designed to hold a row of factory-made cigarettes securely in place, a hallmark of 1930s cigarette case engineering.
Condition:
Overall excellent vintage condition with only light surface wear to the enamel, no enamel losses, and a small area of subtle texture near the cartouche, noted for accuracy. The hinge and closure function perfectly.
Marathon was a well-loved maker of smoking accessories from the 1920s through the 1940s, known for producing pieces that were stylish, durable, and very much in line with the bold modern sensibility of the Art Deco era. Their cigarette cases often paired chrome-plated bodies with vibrant enamel work, clean geometric layouts, and smooth, reliable spring mechanisms that held cigarettes securely in place.
