Very rare Art Deco Ikora accessory set with tray, by WMF, circa 1925-1930. This set´s design and finish was directly inspired by the discovery of Tuthankhamen´s tomb in 1923. The set is made out of brass and has a light to dark oxydized turquoise patina which evokes the jewels of the pharaos, the set is engraved with symbols reminischent of the Egyptian roylaties. A perfect example of oriental style influence in the German Art Deco era. The oriental style was very popular in Germany as opposed to the French Art Deco style which relied heavily on African or American tribal design. The traditional Wu¨rttembergische Metalfabrik created a special division in their plant, the "Neuen Kunstgewerblichen Abteilung ( NKA) which goal was to produce decorative objects which would be strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs. These objects bore from that time the special name "Ikora" originates from a south east asian flower which was devoted to the cult of the greek godess Ixora. The selection of such name was intended to give the product a touch of exclusivity and preciousness. The Art Deco style name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts De´coratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Its products included both individually crafted luxury items and mass-produced wares, but, in either case, the intention was to create a sleek and anti traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. The distinguishing features of the style are shapes that ares geometric or stylized from representational forms and crafted out of often expensive materials, which frequently include man-made substances in addition to natural ones (jade, silver, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal). Though Art Deco objects were rarely mass-produced, the characteristic features of the style reflected admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent design qualities of machine-made objects Decorative ideas came from American Indian, Egyptian, and early classical sources as well as from nature. Characteristic motifs included nude female figures, animals, foliage, and sunrays, all in conventionalized forms. Most of the outstanding Art Deco creators designed individually crafted or limited-edition items. They included the furniture designers Jacques Ruhlmann the architect Eliel Saarinen; metalsmith Jean Puiforcat; glass and jewelry designer Rene´ Lalique; fashion designer Erte´; and the figural sculptor Chiparus. Modernism, particularly the austere form we now associate with the Bauhaus, was developing among the avant garde designers as an intellectual expression of the age of the machine and technology. The pioneers of modernism had rejected market-led consumerism, instead aiming for mass-produced goods that concentrated on social utility and usefulness.

WMF Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik

The fine brass, copper and silver metalware produced by distinguished manufacturer Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) has adorned the tabletops of restaurants, hotels and homes around the world. WMF is especially prized by collectors for its Art Nouveau works of the late 19th century and Art Deco pieces manufactured throughout the early 20th century.

WMF traces its beginnings to 1880 when the merger of Straub Sohn and Ritter Co. formed the public limited company Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. The company initially focused on tableware and decorative pieces, such as vases and planters. In 1892, WMF introduced its patented “perfect hard silver plating,” a technology that distributes twice as much silver to the sections of cutlery that experience the most wear, allowing the whole piece to hold its luster longer than other silver-plated products.

In 1905, WMF acquired a majority holding of Orivit AG, a company in Cologne that manufactured products from a tin alloy, further expanding its range of materials. By 1910, its main facility in Geislingen, Germany, employed 4,000 workers. It had branches in Vienna, Warsaw and London, and printed a catalog in 12 languages.

As a German business, WMF experienced extensive asset loss in the aftermath of the world wars. However, by 1950, its main facility once again had a workforce of more than 3,000 employees, and its high-quality products returned to popularity. There was an increase in demand for its Cromargan cutlery as well as work by WMF’s preeminent lighting designer, Wilhelm Wagenfeld.

By the 1960s, WMF’s main facility had 5,800 employees. More factories were opened to keep up with demand. WMF is now one of the largest manufacturers of metalware in the world and continues to produce pieces of superb quality. The company has over 200 branches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and owns branches in 40 other countries.

For your consideration is this excellent condition Art Deco ladies combination compact dating to 1928. This is a classic Art Deco Richard Hudnut Le Debut Cloisonné Powder, Rouge and Mirror Compact and is an absolute delight in every aspect and genuinely has appears never to have been used. This compact features a black enamel lid with cream dotted accents; the back of the compact has a spider web machine-tooled finish to accent the octagonal shape of the compact. The case opens to a rouge compartment with a mirror in the lid that is behind a gold toned Art Deco decorated cover. The loose powder compartment is in the lower section of the compact; and it has a hinged and latched recessed door to hold a puff. This feature was a later addition to the initial solid powder product release of 1924 and has the patent date stamped on the underside of the hinged door reflecting an issue date of 1928. The original rouge is in untouched condition and still shows the embossed name Le Debut while the loose powder well is empty. Inside it is hallmarked "Le Debut", "Richard Hudnut" on the Art Deco mirror frame...
