About the Item
This is an irresistible Italian doll of the classic Commedia Dell'arte figure the Harlequin, or Arlecchino, as he is known in Italian. Probably made in Venice, last quarter of the 20th century.
This doll is meticulously crafted with a papier mache, hand painted face and hands, and a fabric body dressed in satin and velvet. The face is highlighted with delicately painted musical notes and a treble clef. No detail of the costume has been overlooked: the red satin, ruffled collar sits above a gold sating bib with pointed ends, each end tied with a small brass bell. The legs are made up of braided black and white harlequin patterned silk, articulated at the knees with buttons. The red velvet pantaloons are accented with gold satin flaps edged in gold and red trim. Extravagant puffed sleeves reveal deep folds lined in more harlequin patterned silk. The hat features pointed satin tassels adorned with tiny brass musical charms including a trumpet, a horn and a guitar. The satin vest is edged in gold cord and the boots feature a trim of lily pad leaves made of green and brown satin.
This doll's wonderful expression can't help but put a smile on anyone's face. It is an exquisitely crafted object in excellent condition.
