About the Item

Colonial Revival: Bradley Hubbard Cast Iron "Chippendale Chair" Bookends (c. 1920s) A handsome pair of antique cast iron bookends produced by the renowned Bradley Hubbard Manufacturing Company (Meriden, Connecticut) during the 1920s. Designed in the Colonial Revival style, each bookend is modeled as the open-work back splat of a classic 18th-century Chippendale side chair. The design features a "Cupid's bow" crest rail and an intricately pierced vase-shaped splat. The iron is finished in a dark, bronzed patina with original cold-painted gold (gilt) highlights accentuating the acanthus leaf details on the crest. Heavy and substantial, these are both decorative and functional library accessories. Markings: The reverse of each bookend bears the impressed circular foundry mark: B&H (intertwined within a circle). This is the standard mark for Bradley Hubbard's decorative metalware produced in the early 20th century. Condition: [Insert Condition Here – e.g., Very good antique condition. The original polychrome finish is intact with appropriate age-related wear and rubbing to the high points and base, adding to the period character. No cracks or repairs to the iron.] Measurements: Height: 14.3 cm (5 5/8 inches) Width: 10.8 cm (4 1/4 inches) Depth: 5.1 cm (2 inches) Historical Context: By the 1920s, Bradley Hubbard (founded 1852) had evolved from making clocks and oil lamps to become one of America's premier producers of high-quality Art Metal goods. Their work was sold in prestigious retailers like Marshall Field’s and Sears. These bookends reflect the Colonial Revival craze that swept America after the 1876 Centennial and peaked in the 1920s. Homeowners sought to reconnect with "Early American" values, leading to a demand for accessories that mimicked the furniture styles of Thomas Chippendale, even in modern materials like cast iron.
