About the Item

Extremely rare, perhaps unique, this stunning pair of gilded bronze bookends depict the ancient figures of Comedy and Tragedy in a modern way, each head poised on a closed book to indicate its purpose. The sculptor was Frederic Allen Williams, who was born in New England and trained in New York, but was deeply fascinated with the Wild West, New Mexico and Mexico, making many visits to the West, and educating young people on its culture and art. Over the years he depicted cowboys, Native Americans and other Western subjects, and also executed a number of portrait bronzes for Will Rogers, Charles Russell, Edwin Markham and others. Many of his papers and images of his work are now held at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas. The gilded finish has a ruddy undertone; both bronzes are signed by Williams, and the Kunst Foundry mark is indicated on one of the two.
