About the Item

A rare treasure from the height of the French Art Deco era: This original pair of sculptural bookends, titled “POUSSÉE”, captures the joyful play of two children in motion. Designed by Janle and cast by the legendary Max Le Verrier foundry, these pieces combine grace, playfulness, and the refined aesthetics that define true Art Deco collectibles. The composition depicts two young figures leaning toward each other, as if caught in a moment of discovery. Their stylized hair, expressive bodies, and smiling faces convey a lively charm and tenderness that transcends time. The sculptures are cast in Spelter (French: Régul) – a popular casting material of the Art Deco period, prized for its ability to render extremely fine detail, particularly in the facial features and limbs. The original green patina gives the pieces a silky, elegant finish, enhancing the three-dimensional character of the design. A special highlight is the delicate craquelure visible on the cube surfaces – a fine network of hairline cracks that has naturally formed over time. This subtle detail is not a flaw, but rather a beautiful hallmark of authenticity, adding vintage allure and historic depth to the ensemble. Both bookends are signed “Janle” on the side of the base. Date of manufacture: France, circa 1930s Designer: Janle Publisher: Max Le Verrier, Paris Material: Spelter (French: Régule) with original green patina Signature: Both pieces signed “Janle” Dimensions (each piece): Width: 17 cm (6.7 in) Height: 15.5 cm (6.1 in) Depth: 7 cm (2.75 in) Condition: Very good original condition. Subtle craquelure to the patinated surface of the bases, affirming the piece’s vintage authenticity. Minor signs of age, no restoration. An exquisite collector’s item with unique character and poetic presence.
