About the Item

French Art Deco Crackle-Glaze Pierrot Bookends by Louis Fontinelle, France, ca. 1920. Charming pair of French Art Deco polychrome crackle-glaze ceramic bookends by Louis Fontinelle, created around 1920 in his workshop in Marines (Paris region). These expressive Pierrot figures capture the whimsical theatrical spirit of the early 20th century, rendered in Fontinelle’s signature sculptural style and vibrant hand-applied glazes. This model was originally sold at the prestigious Magasins du Louvre in Paris, one of the city’s leading luxury department stores of the time—adding desirable provenance to an already collectible Art Deco piece. Dimensions (each) • Width: 6.3 in (16 cm) • Height: 5.5 in (14 cm) • Depth: 2.6 in (6.5 cm) Signature Both bookends are signed “L. Fontinelle” on the base. About Louis Fontinelle (French, early 20th century) Louis Fontinelle was a notable French sculptor and ceramist active during the Art Deco period, particularly known for his expressive figurative ceramics. Working from his workshop in Marines (near Paris), Fontinelle produced vases, statuettes, masks, and decorative objects distinguished by bold modeling and richly colored crackle glazes. His works were widely retailed in major Parisian luxury stores, including the Magasins du Louvre, helping establish his reputation among collectors of modern decorative arts. Today, Fontinelle’s creations are admired for their sculptural presence, refined craftsmanship, and quintessentially Art Deco character.
