About the Item
French Art Deco Ceramic Squirrel Bookends by Octave Larrieu, France, 1920s
These charming French Art Deco ceramic squirrel bookends were created in the 1920s by acclaimed sculptor and ceramist Octave Larrieu. Beautifully modeled in stylized Art Deco forms, the squirrels display the refined sculptural sensitivity for which Larrieu is known.
Each bookend is individually signed “OLarrieu” on the base.
Height: 8.4 in. (21.3 cm)
Width: 5.5 in. (14 cm)
Depth: 3.25 in. (8.3 cm)
The line visible on the back of one squirrel is a glaze crackle, consistent with the natural craquelure present on the bodies. The pieces are in very good condition.
These bookends are a superb example of 1920s French Art Deco craftsmanship, combining sculptural elegance with decorative functionality—perfect for collectors of early 20th-century ceramics and animal-themed Art Deco objects.
About Octave Larrieu (1881–1965)
Born in Argentina in 1881 and raised in France, Octave Larrieu was a sculptor and ceramist trained in Paris, where he moved among leading artistic circles. He worked at the Manufacture de Sèvres, apprenticed alongside major sculptors, and was influenced by masters such as Auguste Rodin. Larrieu made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1907.
A soldier during the First World War, he was gassed on the front and later settled in Maubourguet in 1919 for health reasons. There he created both sculptural works and architectural monuments, including the war memorial of Maubourguet, while developing a distinguished career in ceramics.
The Larrieu Family Workshop (Octave
Simone Larrieu)
Beginning in 1930, Octave worked closely with his daughter, Simone Larrieu—a painter, pastellist, and member of the La Palette artists’ association. Together they produced stoneware and earthenware with painted and relief decoration, most of which derived from Simone’s original designs.
Their creations are quintessentially Art Deco, featuring engraved reliefs, stylized motifs, florals, and exotic themes. During the early 1930s, their stoneware reached a peak influenced by the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, incorporating African-inspired subjects such as elephants, panthers, lush vegetation, and expressive animal figures. Simone also created large floral and avian motifs for vases, pitchers, and decorative objects.
Some pieces from the workshop were signed Charlotte Pommier, a model for Octave and ceramic decorator. The atelier also produced lamp bases, dinner services, table centerpieces, and various utilitarian objects. Simone briefly left for Paris between 1936 and 1939, returning before World War II and later moving to Gironde while continuing to contribute designs. She ultimately devoted more time to watercolor painting, while Octave also pursued painting later in life.
The Larrieu workshop’s production was exceptional, limited, and widely admired. Their works were distributed in Tarbes, Lourdes, the Basque coast, and even exported to Asia and Vietnam, making original pieces increasingly sought-after by collectors today.
