About the Item

Pair of bookends on oak board mounting two small terrestrial and celestial globes. Edited by Columbus Schulerglobus, cartographer prof Paul Oestergaard Berlin Stuttgart in the 1960s. Oak wood base, lithographed cardboard spheres, complete with the engraved aluminum meridian circle. Good condition, excellent readability. Base width cm 12 - 4.8 inches , height cm 15 - 5.9 inches, sphere diameter cm 10 - 3.9 inches. The last photo is the gift box. Founded in 1909 in Berlin by Paul Oestergaard, grandson of Peter J. Oestergaard, who manufactured globes in the late 1800s, Columbus is the oldest globe manufacturer still working in the world today. During more than a century, Columbus has been innovating the globe manufacturing industry, and the experience accumulated over 4 generations has enabled Columbus to achieve the status of the world's leading globe manufacturer. Peter J. Oestergaard began its production in the late 1800s. After producing earth models for the Berlin Newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung for a few years, he soon became known for his stunningly detailed globes. He then decided to open his own globe store; Peter Oesteergard was succeeded by his son Peter Oestergaard Jr. who renamed the firm Drei Kegel Verlag; the firm ceased operations during World War II due to the untimely death of Peter Oesterggard Jr. Instead, Peter Oesterggard's grandson, Paul Oestergaard, would open the famous Columbus Verlag, which still exists today. The earliest known globe is the one attributed by Strabo, historian and geographer, to the Greek Cratetes of Mallo (c.a. 150 B.C.). The first globes in the early 16th century were built under the impetus of the great geographical explorations and immediately began to be used for educational purposes at princely courts, monasteries, and colleges; the globe later began to conquer university circles and high and lower schools. It will be with the nineteenth century of great commerce, circulation and the introduction of compulsory schooling that the desire to learn about distant countries will increase, making the old method of globe construction inadequate. Spindles printed from engraved plates were no longer enough, and the only real resource became lithography through which maps could be printed and updated in a timely manner as geographical discoveries grew.
