About the Item

Pair of Antique Natural Hippopotamus Tooth Bookends, Mounted Sculptural Specimen A rare and striking pair of mounted natural hippopotamus tooth bookends, dating from the turn of the 20th century. Each gracefully curved tooth has been expertly presented on a custom dark wood base, transforming these organic forms into sculptural decorative objects with strong presence and tactile appeal. The warm ivory-toned surface shows the natural striations, growth patterns, and variations that make these specimens so captivating. Perfect for displaying books on a nightstand, mantel, desk, console, or library shelf, they are guaranteed conversation pieces—ideal for collectors of natural history, curiosities, and early scientific artifacts. According to the previous owner, these teeth were collected in Africa by his father during early travels and originated from an animal that died of natural causes; they were not taken as hunting trophies. No animal was harmed for the creation of these decorative specimen bookends. Dimensions: 7 1/2" High × 8 1/8" Wide × 3 3/8" Deep (The antique books shown are for photography purposes and are not included.)
