About the Item
Pair of French Art Deco BISON bookends made of ebony and horn from the 1920s by Dan (Daniel Karner)
The objects have a very cubist design, with the wedge-shaped base made of dark walnut wood protruding upwards and the object leaning against it in a slightly stooped attack position.
The bulls carved from ebony are straight and parallel to the base.
The tail and forehead have a ribbed texture, but otherwise the bull is rather smooth.
The horns are made of real horn and form a perfect contrast to the dark animal.
Overall, the bookends are very impressive and extremely decorative.
Both objects are signed “dankarner, Paris” by hand on the base.
A small piece is missing from one horn, which can be replaced at an additional cost.
(It must be re-carved by hand), but we believe that this does not detract from the beauty of the antique bookends.
Dan Karner
Dan Karner, also known as Daniel Karner, was a French designer and craftsman who worked in France in the 1930s. Until 1940, he had a small craft business in Paris, in the third arrondissement. Karner mainly worked alone with apprentices. He specialized in wood carving and elegant home decor. From bookends to cocktail tops, from desk accessories to decorative lamps, his creations were always refined and limited editions. One morning in 1940, he did not come to open his workshop. Karner was of Jewish descent, and it is said that he left Paris and crossed the whole of France and the Pyrenees to escape the German occupation of Paris. He did not return to France after the Second World War, but there are some pieces on the market with his signature and the note "Creaciones - Barcelona - Spain".
This could indicate that he was successful in his journey to Spain and freedom and was able to resume his activities in Barcelona.

French Art Deco Bronze Panther on Marble Base with Jade Trim, signed LEDUC 1910s
Located in Salzburg, AT
French Art Deco bronze panther on marble base with jade trim, signed by hand, LEDUC
This object is a very rare depiction of a panther playing with a ball.
The seated animal is in an attacking position, teeth bared, ears flattened, and paw extended to strike the ball.
The situation is skillfully captured, and the overall arrangement of materials and colors is harmonious.
The jade edging is interrupted at the front and back by black stripes in marble, and the panther has a very beautiful patina. The jade setting has different tones ranging from light to slightly richer.
There are also white inclusions in the stone, but no chipped corners or edges.
