About the Item
This pair of cast brass or bronze bookends are unsigned, but presumed to have originated from North America, likely the United States, and date to approximately 1940 and done in the period Mid-Century Modern brutalist style. The bookends depict a stylized bare chested male foundry worker pouring a ladle of molten metal into a mold. A slight irony in that the mold being depicted could be for the bookends themselves. The casting of the bookends is rough, showing considerable slag around the edges, and the front surface shows some oxidization and inclusions. These are very solid and sturdy bookends and would support a considerable number of books without tipping over.

USA, 1936
A rare and striking pair of Art Deco gilt iron bookends, crafted in 1936 during the WPA era and American Deco period. Each bookend is stamped with "NMF" on the left side and the date "1936" on the right, confirming their authenticity and historical significance.
