Sculptural pair of travertine bookends designed by Fratelli Mannelli, Italy, circa 1970s.
Carved from solid travertine stone, these iconic elephant-form bookends exemplify the architectural and material-driven approach characteristic of Italian design of the period. The stylized silhouettes combine strong geometric volumes with playful figurative references, resulting in a balanced dialogue between sculpture and function.
The natural porosity, fossil inclusions, and tonal variations of the travertine are integral to the design, lending each piece a unique surface character and depth. - Condition:Repaired: One of the two elephant bookends shows what appears to be a previous restoration, visible as a subtle tonal variation and surface intervention in the stone. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Good vintage condition overall. This does not affect the structural integrity or functionality of the piece and remains consistent with age and material. Minor surface wear and natural irregularities typical of travertine and period use are present.
