About the Item

Heavy pair of vintage bronze plated bookends depict a seated scholar reading a book. The bookends are attributed to Pompeian Bronze Co, who were manufacturing this style of bookends in 1920s. The bookends are in good vintage condition with beautiful, age-appropriate patina. The Pompeian Bronze company was founded in Brooklyn, NY, in early 1900s. They specialized in bronze-clad or electro-clad pieces, made by adhering a skin of bronze to a plaster sculpture through a chemical process (similar to silver-plating), that were very popular in the early 1900s and were done by a number of different companies. Pompeian Bronze produced catalogs of hundreds of pieces ranging from ashtrays to lamps. Sone of their designs were inspired by well-known artists, such as Auguste Rodin or Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet, but some bookend designs (repurposed as lamps, sculptures, and other decor items in the company catalogue) were created specifically for Pompeian Bronze and patented by Peter Manfredi in early 1920s. By the late 30s the company has gone out of business.
