Art Deco Bookends

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Pair of Art Deco Gilt Iron WPA Style Foundry Men Bookends Signed NMF 1936
By WPA
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Pair of Art Deco Gilt Iron WPA Style Foundry Men Bookends Signed NMF 1936 USA, 1936 A rare and striking pair of Art Deco gilt iron bookends, crafted in 1936 during the WPA era and American Deco period. These sculptural bookends are a fine example of the era's unique blend of Greco-Roman classical art with modern industrial design. Each bookend stands 10.5 inches high, 6.5 inches wide, and 2.75 inches deep, featuring a subtly detailed silhouette of a muscular, shirtless foundryman pouring molten metal into a crucible. The design captures the strength and dignity of the working man, a theme prevalent during the WPA period, which sought to honor and celebrate American labor through art. The gilt iron finish adds a touch of elegance and durability, ensuring these pieces are both functional and visually captivating. Each bookend is stamped with "NMF" on the left side and the date "1936" on the right, confirming their authenticity and historical significance. This rare pair of bookends is not only a functional accessory but also a piece of American history, reflecting the spirit of the 1930s. Ready to be placed and enjoyed, they make a perfect addition to any collection of Art Deco or WPA-era memorabilia...

Pair of Art Deco Bookends Signed P Kiss
Located in NANTES, FR
Pair of bookends circa 1930. Wrought iron squirrels stamped P. Kiss for Paul Kiss. In perfect condition. Total height: 17.5 cm Width: 14.2 cm Depth: 7.5 cm Total weight: 5.8 kg A French master ironworker, Paul Kiss was born in 1885 in Belafalva, Romania, and trained in Central and Western Europe before settling in Paris. He gained recognition and awards in the mid-1920s, when he gained recognition for his Art Nouveau and Art Deco-inspired creations with the arrival of Cubism and its clean lines. This is evidenced by an article by critic George Denoinville on the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, and more specifically on Paul Kiss, whose contribution to interior and exterior furniture he celebrated through decorative objects such as console tables, doors, and radiator covers. According to him, Paul Kiss… "Master Ironworker works tirelessly towards this goal… What stood out above all was this interior partition door, so simple, rich in patterns and frames, that it appeared to us like a veritable metallic lacework. …Paul Kiss is, without a doubt, one of our most original artistic ironworkers…" Excerpts from "Mobilier et Décoration, December 1925," pp. 21-27. After the First World War, Kiss opened his own studio and showroom on rue Léon-Delhomme. Kiss designed and produced numerous pieces of iron furniture throughout the 1920s and 1930s. He was commissioned to restore historic monuments and create new public monuments. His clients included the kings of Siam and Egypt. Kiss created the metalwork for the Monuments aux Morts war memorial in Levallois-Perret, France, for which he received the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. In the 1920s, Kiss mentored the young designer Paul Fehér...
